Description
The Bangor House, designed by Charles Bryant and built between 1833 and 1835, cost about $125,000 to build and furnish. It opened on Christmas evening of 1834. Throughout the years, many famous people stayed there, including but not limited to: Teddy Roosevelt, Ulysses S. Grant, Howard Taft, Jack Benny, Bette Davis, Tammy Dorsey, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt actually gave a speech the day after she spent the night on May 20, 1941. By 1978, the hotel had been closed, sold and renovated as a home for low-income elderly people.
